Description
“If a woman smiles, her dress must also smile”—or so insisted French designer Madeleine Vionnet, the trailblazing couturier who revolutionized 20th-century women’s clothing with bias-cut gowns and intricately draped frocks. Born to a modest family in a town just outside Paris, Vionnet began her career as an 11-year-old seamstress and continued her education as a linen maid in a psychiatric hospital. After working her way through several design houses, she finally opened her own in Paris in 1912, spurring an anti-corset movement in fashion, one that embraced women’s curves rather than molding them. Vionnet is now considered one of the most creative masters of her period, alongside Paul Poiret, Coco Chanel, and Elsa Schiaparelli—an accomplishment Chronicle Books set out to commemorate on the 100th anniversary of her design house in the recently released Madeleine Vionnet. And in contemporary times, Vionnet is no less relevant—the gowns of the 20s in particular influenced the costume designers of Downton Abbey, with at least one of Mary’s frocks in Season Three—a red, sleeveless evening dress—being a copy of a Vionnet design. Perhaps in Season Four, she’ll take a Parisian shopping jaunt.
